Manchester United 5-2 Ipswich, and the evening belonged to one player. Bruno Fernandes completed a hat-trick and added an assist — the standout individual display of Gameweek 2 so far.
How the match went
United settled it going forward. Three goals from Bruno, a strike from Bryan Mbeumo and an own goal from Greaves made up the five. Ipswich replied through Davis and Akpom, but it never threatened the result.
The assists came from Matheus Cunha, who provided two, plus Harry Maguire and Mbeumo. Bruno himself added a pass for a team-mate’s goal, meaning he was directly involved in four of United’s five.
What it means for FPL
Bruno is owned by close to half the game, and this was the highest-scoring individual performance of the round. We are not publishing the exact haul yet, because the game has not finalised bonus points — that happens after the last match of the gameweek, Monday’s Aston Villa v Arsenal. We will confirm the numbers then.
What is certain is that anyone who kept the armband on him has had a very good weekend. Matheus Cunha also deserves a mention: two assists at under ten percent ownership.
Honestly about our recommendation
In Friday’s captaincy piece we named Morgan Rogers as the best profile for this round. Bruno sat third on our list, with the same low risk and a marginally lower ceiling, and we said plainly that picking him instead was a reasonable call.
This time the alternative beat the main recommendation. Rogers did register an assist in Chelsea’s 4-3 win over Brighton, but that is not a hat-trick.
It is the second such case in this gameweek, after Haaland’s double on Friday. The model narrows the field to a handful of names well enough, but it cannot tell you which of them explodes on a given weekend. Worth remembering when reading any captaincy ranking, including ours.
Elsewhere in the round
Chelsea beat Brighton 4-3 in the most open game of the weekend, Tottenham lost 2-0 at home to Newcastle, and Liverpool drew 2-2 with Nottingham Forest. Sunderland beat Fulham 1-0, Leeds drew with Brentford, and Hull won at Coventry.
The round closes with Monday’s Aston Villa v Arsenal, the only fixture rated at maximum difficulty for both sides. Our full review, with the mini-league table, follows after that.
