The 2026/27 Premier League season kicks off tonight at 8pm UK time. At the Emirates, the champions host a side returning to the top flight after a quarter of a century away.
Coventry are back after 25 years
Coventry City last played in the Premier League in 2000/01. Twenty-five years have passed since, a stretch that took the club as far down as the third tier. They won the Championship in May and return to the division where older supporters remember them under Gordon Strachan.
In the Coventry dugout sits Frank Lampard. It is his first meeting with Mikel Arteta since May 2023, when he was still in charge of Chelsea. Two former Premier League midfielders, now on opposite touchlines, in the match that opens the season.
Arsenal defend the title, but not at full strength
Arsenal won last season by seven points from Manchester City. They begin the defence with problems in defence and midfield:
- William Saliba and Jurriën Timber — both injured with no return date. That is why the club moved this week for Ezri Konsa at £50m, without managing to register him for tonight.
- Declan Rice — reportedly still needs recovery time after the World Cup. He started the Community Shield on the bench.
- Bukayo Saka — also rested after the tournament, but he may return to the starting eleven.
- Bruno Guimarães — carries a thigh injury note and a 75% chance of playing as of this morning.
Coventry have issues too: Haji Wright is out with a thigh injury and no return date, while Jack Rudoni and Frank Onyeka faced late fitness tests.
For FPL managers: the deadline passes before team news
This is today’s most important practical point. The Gameweek 1 deadline closes at 18:30, and starting elevens are confirmed around 19:00 — an hour before kick-off. You are deciding blind.
One name carries that risk more than others. Declan Rice is owned by 18.7% of managers, and the game shows no flag beside his name — he looks fully available. Yet the reporting describes a player still working back to full fitness after the World Cup.
That does not mean he will not start. It means this is a risk the game will not show you — exactly as with Konsa, whom we covered yesterday. If Rice is in your starting eleven, it is worth having somebody on the bench who is certain to play.

A league reshaped over the summer
This season starts differently from the last. Seven clubs changed manager, and transfer records fell one after another: Morgan Rogers to Chelsea for £117m, Elliot Anderson to City for £116m, Bruno Guimarães to Arsenal for £75m.
The biggest change came at Newcastle, who lost Guimarães, Tonali and Gordon, and finally their manager too. In our squad strength table the club now has zero players rated 85 or above — alongside Fulham and the three promoted sides.
Coventry sit at the bottom of that same table with Ipswich and Hull: not a single player rated above 75. Our model rewards proven Premier League minutes, and Lampard’s squad does not have them yet. Tonight they start collecting.
What to watch tonight
Arsenal are favourites and the official difficulty rating agrees — 2 out of 5 for the hosts, 5 out of 5 for the visitors. But opening rounds have their own logic: teams are not yet settled, several players are returning from a World Cup, and a promoted side plays without pressure.
