Update (20 August): Arsenal did not register Konsa before Thursday’s midday deadline, so he cannot face Coventry on Friday (Evening Standard). With Villa losing him to a direct rival, an appearance against Brighton on Sunday looks equally unlikely. His Arsenal debut may not arrive until 31 August — at Villa Park. He still appears as a Villa player in the FPL database, with no flag attached. We set this out in full in our final-day piece.
Arsenal have agreed a deal with Aston Villa for Ezri Konsa. The fee is £50m plus add-ons, personal terms are settled and a long-term contract is in place. A medical is due within 48 hours — first reported by The Athletic and confirmed by Sky Sports.
Villa initially wanted £60m and Arsenal wanted to pay considerably less. The clubs met in the middle. The 28-year-old England international joined Villa from Brentford in 2019 for £12m.
Why Arsenal need a defender right now
The answer is in the game’s data rather than in any club statement. Two Arsenal centre-backs are injured with no return date given: William Saliba has a back problem and Jurriën Timber a groin injury. That leaves Gabriel, Riccardo Calafiori and Cristhian Mosquera, whom our model rates at just 53 with a “sell” verdict.
The champions begin their title defence on Friday with a broken defence. Hence the urgency, and hence the fee.
The deadline that decides everything
Konsa must be registered by midday on Thursday to be available for Friday’s opener against Coventry. That is less than a day from the time of writing.
What it means for your FPL squad
This is one of those transfers that genuinely reshapes the picture before a deadline — and it affects a lot of managers.
Konsa is owned by 15.7% of managers, roughly one in six. At £4.5m he sits in a great many squads as a cheap defender.
Look at the difference in the opening fixture:
- Aston Villa play Sunday away at Brighton. Official difficulty: 3 out of 5.
- Arsenal play Friday at home to Coventry, a promoted side. Official difficulty: 2 out of 5 — the easiest fixture of the round.
Put differently: the same £4.5m player could either travel to a mid-table side or host a newly promoted one. For a defender whose points hinge on clean sheets, that is an enormous gap.
Three scenarios before Friday
1. The game moves him to Arsenal before the deadline. A £4.5m defender at the champions, at home to a promoted side, becomes one of the more interesting options at that price — provided he starts.
2. The game does not update in time. Then you are buying an Aston Villa player with a trip to Brighton. As of writing, Konsa still appears as a Villa player in the database, with no note attached.
3. He moves but does not play. A new signing, post-medical, arriving mid-week at a club whose defensive patterns he does not yet know. Even with two centre-backs injured, there is no guarantee Arteta starts him.
Our advice: do not touch your squad today. Check again on Thursday afternoon, once the registration deadline has passed, and once more on Friday before the deadline.
Being straight about our rating
This morning, writing about Matteo Ruggeri’s move to Villa, we called Konsa an example of a popularity trap: 15% ownership against our rating of 73.
That conclusion stands, but it needs context. The 73 described Konsa as an Aston Villa defender — with that fixture list and that team in front of him. Our model weighs upcoming fixture difficulty among other things, so a move to Arsenal will recalculate the rating automatically once the game updates his club. We sync data hourly, so the rankings will show the new figure without us touching anything.
This is not a retraction. It is a reminder that rating a player and rating his situation are two different things, and the second has just changed.
Where this leaves Aston Villa
Villa lose their best-rated centre-back two days before the season starts. In the same week they signed Matteo Ruggeri from Atlético Madrid for around €25m, but he is a left-back, not a replacement for Konsa. Earlier in the summer Morgan Rogers left for Chelsea for a British record £117m, Youri Tielemans for Manchester United and Lucas Digne for PSG.
Among Villa defenders at £5.0m or under, Matty Cash remains, and we rate him 79 — higher than Konsa.
