Update (25 July): United beat Rosenborg 5-0 in Trondheim, but JJ Gabriel’s debut will have to wait. The 15-year-old was named among the substitutes but stayed on the bench as Michael Carrick continues to manage his development carefully. We’ll update the moment the debut comes.
Manchester United round off their Norwegian pre-season trip against Rosenborg in Trondheim today, and the biggest talking point isn’t a new signing — it’s a 15-year-old academy forward. JJ Gabriel is in line to make his senior debut.
Gabriel is the most talked-about talent to come through United’s academy in years. He was named Premier League Under-18 Player of the Year after scoring 21 goals and adding five assists in just 23 games for the U-18s in 2025/26, and he is already United’s youngest-ever scorer in the FA Youth Cup. Born in October 2010, he only recently became old enough to be considered for senior minutes, and clubs including Barcelona and Arsenal have been credited with interest.
Head coach Michael Carrick has been careful not to rush him. The teenager is “too young” for the Premier League just yet, the manager has stressed, pointing to the importance of managing his development step by step. A run-out in a pre-season friendly is exactly that kind of controlled first step, and Gabriel is expected to get some minutes off the bench against Rosenborg.
Whatever happens in Trondheim, this is a name to file away. Gabriel won’t be a Premier League regular this season — Carrick has made that much clear — but a senior debut at 15 is a milestone, and United clearly believe they have something special on their hands.
