Chelsea have agreed a deal to sign Pep Chavarría from Rayo Vallecano, with Fabrizio Romano declaring “here we go” on Thursday evening. The move is for a €19m fixed fee plus €2m in add-ons — an initial outlay of around £16.3m, according to Sky Sports.
The 28-year-old left-back was set to fly in for a medical and contract signing, with club-to-club paperwork expected to be completed the same night. As of publication the transfer had not been officially confirmed by either club, but the deal is done in principle.
Chavarría fills the gap on Chelsea’s left flank left by Marc Cucurella’s summer move to Real Madrid, and is understood to be a priority target for head coach Xabi Alonso. Ben Jacobs and Sky Sports had both reported the Blues closing in before Romano confirmed the fixed fee.
A left-back who can also operate as a wing-back, the Spanish defender made 44 appearances in all competitions for Rayo Vallecano last season and started in their Conference League final defeat — a 1-0 loss to Crystal Palace. He brings a blend of defensive reliability and attacking output down the left, exactly the profile Chelsea have been chasing since Cucurella’s exit.
It is the latest piece of Alonso’s Chelsea rebuild, which has already brought in Danny Welbeck and, earlier in the window, Maxence Lacroix and the record £117m signing of Morgan Rogers. The Spaniard took charge at Stamford Bridge this summer as part of a wave of new Premier League managers.
For FPL, a nailed-on Chelsea left-back is always worth monitoring — clean-sheet upside behind a strong defence, plus the odd attacking return. But as a new arrival who still has to win the spot, Chavarría is one for the watchlist rather than your Gameweek 1 XI.
