The most fiercely contested transfer saga of the Premier League summer has its winner — and a new British record. Chelsea have agreed a £117m deal with Aston Villa for Morgan Rogers, as first reported by Sky Sports and confirmed by ESPN, making the England forward the most expensive British player in history. The deal is not yet official: Rogers is due to undergo his medical on Monday after returning from England’s World Cup campaign, with completion expected early next week.
A record on three fronts
The £117m fee eclipses the £116m Manchester City paid Nottingham Forest for Elliot Anderson earlier this month as the highest sum ever spent on a British player. It also makes Rogers Chelsea’s record signing, surpassing the £115m paid to Brighton for Moisés Caicedo in 2023. Only Liverpool’s £125m capture of Alexander Isak has cost a Premier League club more for any player. Rogers has agreed the framework of an initial six-year contract, with an option for a seventh season.
Arsenal lose their No 1 target
This one will sting in north London. Arsenal made Rogers their top attacking target this summer and stayed in regular contact with Villa — but, per ESPN’s sources, repeatedly proved unwilling to meet the asking price. As we covered in Friday’s transfer roundup, Villa were holding out for a fee in the region of €130m — and Chelsea, with new boss Xabi Alonso pushing the project, simply paid it. Rogers waited until England’s World Cup run was over before making his decision, and chose Stamford Bridge.
What Chelsea are buying
Rogers arrived at Villa Park from Middlesbrough in February 2024 for around £15m. Since then: 31 goals and 29 assists in 125 appearances, a regular England shirt, and an assist in the World Cup semi-final against Argentina — setting up Anthony Gordon’s opener — before England sealed bronze in Saturday’s ten-goal thriller with France. At 24, he leaves as one of the best-value sales in Premier League history.
Villa’s rebuild, bankrolled
For Aston Villa, this caps an extraordinary summer of churn. Youri Tielemans left for Manchester United via his release clause, while the Europa League winners moved fast on replacements — hijacking Newcastle’s move for Johan Manzambi in a deal worth almost €70m and agreeing terms with Wolves for João Gomes. A British-record sale now hands Unai Emery’s successors in the transfer department the biggest war chest in the club’s history.
Barring surprises in Monday’s medical, expect official confirmation within days. The window closes on 1 September.
